Where car rental actually breaks

We wanted to build something better in car rental, so we started with the complaints.
We compiled the data behind nearly 2 million reviews and coded 80+ documented failures by theme and mechanism. The pattern is almost boringly clear. 7 in 10 of the failures we documented come down to four things: damage and disputes, timing at the counter, insurance and deductibles, and deposits. The typical stated loss is around $420. One in ten is severe - over $1,000, or the trip gone.
Here's what matters. These failures don't live in one place. Some happen at the counter, some upstream in the booking chain, often in several places at once. And a complaint tends to land where the customer felt it, not always where it started. That's why we hold the detail privately - by company, by broker, by everyone in between - and share only the overview.
We're using this to build something we think is genuinely better. But the goal isn't only our customers. It's a better rental experience, whoever's customer it is.
KEY FINDING
7 in 10 documented failures trace to four themes: damage, timing at the counter, insurance and deductibles, and deposits.
Method: This is our own categorization, coded by failure mechanism rather than the symptom - so a turndown or a surprise fee shows up under whatever caused it. Directional, not the last word.
