How much does a European road trip really cost?

More than the fuel estimate. On top of fuel you pay motorway tolls in some countries and prepaid vignettes in others (Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria). Our planner adds all three into one round-trip figure - fuel and vignettes from real prices, motorway tolls modelled - so the total is an estimate, not a quote.

Can I take a rental car across European borders?

Sometimes, and it depends on the route and the company. Many rentals allow travel within the EU, some cross-border trips need written permission, and routes into certain non-EU and eastern countries are commonly restricted. Rules vary by operator and get stricter heading into non-EU countries - treat any read as a starting point and confirm at booking.

What is a vignette and do I need one for a European road trip?

A vignette is a prepaid pass to use a country's motorways for a set period, not a per-km toll. Several European countries require one, and most are now e-vignettes tied to your licence plate. A rental usually carries the vignette only for the country you rent in - for every other vignette country on your route you buy that country's own.
